I have spent the last two years as a part of a student newspaper and I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every moment. My experience of university would have been greatly diminished if I hadn’t had the opportunity to participate in student media.
Student media provides an important outlet for students to hold both the university and their union to account, and serves as a way for potential journalists to get a taste of what working for such an organisation is like.
It’s for these reasons why we all should stand up against Sheffield Students’ Union and its plans to downsize student media, to the post that Forge, their award-winning student newspaper, would be forced to turn away willing students, denying them the skills and experience of student media. This is not to mention the loss of half of their computers, reducing the high quality of the paper.
I have a lot of respect for Forge; it is a great student newspaper, made to a high quality and with a high standard of copy to match. I have also had the pleasure of working with a former Deputy Editor of Forge, who was an extremely talented journalist, displaying a wide variety of skills and improving our paper a lot. It would be an immense shame to see such a talent be turned away due to a lack of resources.
If you feel the same way, I would strongly encourage everyone with an interest in student media to sign the official petition here to save Forge from the planned reorganisation, and to also email Sheffield Students’ Union, demanding them to protect their nationally recognised, multi-award winning student media.
